About the Organisation
The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC)is an embodiment of state concern for
the promotion and protection of human rights. It was constituted in accordance with the
Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, which was enacted by the Government of India to establish
human rights commissions at both the national and state levels. This Act mandated the
establishment of the Human Rights Commissions in India. The Governor of Telangana appoints a
chairperson and other members to the Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC). The Chairperson
of the Commission ought to be a [Chief Justice or a Judge] of a High Court who has since
retired, one Member who is, or has been a Judge of a High Court or District Judge in the State
with a minimum of seven years’ experience as District Judge and another Member to be appointed
from among persons having knowledge of or practical experience in matters relating to human
rights. The Telangana Human Rights Commission's primary responsibility is to investigate
allegations of human rights abuses that have been reported within the state of Telangana. It has
the authority to investigate allegations of violations of human rights committed against
individuals by public servants, government agencies, or any other authority that falls under its
purview. The entire state of Telangana falls under the purview of the Telangana Human Rights
Commission (TGHRC).
